On the football side, the conference last year announced an eight-year deal with the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium.Īnd the Big Ten will begin an annual basketball-hockey doubleheader at the Garden. Along with New York, the basketball tournament will be played at Washington D.C.'s Verizon Center in 2017. Since stretching its geography to include Rutgers and Maryland, the Big Ten has made a conscious effort to bring more events to the New York region. "But they also understand the advantages and are willing to do it." "In a perfect world, they'd rather have it a week later," Delany said. The Big East is locked in a long-term agreement with the Garden.ĭelany admitted it wasn't his basketball coaches' first choice but the conceded the idle time before the NCAA tournament in order to grab the New York venue. The Big Ten had no choice but to make the concession. "It's going to be a great experience for our student-athletes and fans to play in Madison Square Garden - along with some logistical challenges we will have to address.'' "We've looked at how we would adjust as well as what, if any, games should be played between the Big Ten and NCAA tournament selections,'' Hollis said. Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis told ESPN on Saturday the Big Ten schools have been working on a scheduling format in order to accommodate pushing up the conference schedule to play the tournament a week earlier. To accommodate the schedule, the league likely will begin conference play in December. The league's champion, once crowned on Selection Sunday, will now be decided a full week ahead of time. The league is so hell-bent on playing in New York, in fact, it is moving the Big Ten tournament up an entire week. Sports Illustrated earlier reported Saturday the tournament's stop in New York. Hopefully this does well, we evaluate and see what happens." Jim Delany said a Big Ten tournament a week earlier in 2018 wasn't coaches' first choice. "That will probably be somebody else's decision, but I think you will see more major events in the Northeast in the next decade. "I think it will be a rotation," Delany told. Records by conference in 2021 NCAA TournamentĮxpected record is as if each team went as far as its seed would indicate. The Big Ten men's basketball tournament will make a cameo appearance at Madison Square Garden in 2018, but league commissioner Jim Delany said Saturday he doubts it will be a one-time only engagement. One final piece of trivia: the Pac-12 and Missouri Valley conferences were the two multi-bid leagues where each team in the bracket won at least once. The second-longest such streak belongs to the Big 12, which goes back to 1999. Despite that poor performance, the ACC kept alive its streak of putting at least one team in the Sweet 16 every year since 1980. The league's 4-7 mark ties the Pac-12 in 2016 for the worst record for a conference with at least seven teams in the tournament. It was not a great year for the ACC, either, which got two wins each from Florida State and Syracuse but saw the other five teams lose in the first round. These two conferences had wildly different regular seasons, and tournament performances that failed to reflect their respective regular-season resumes. That came in 1997, when the league was still the Pac-10. Arizona is the last Pac-12 team to win the title. The Big Ten's streak without a championship has now been extended to 20 tournaments, but the Pac-12 has gone three years longer. The conference has only been in existence since 1996. The other came in 2008, when Kansas beat Memphis in overtime in San Antonio. The win also marks the second NCAA championship for the Big 12. The Bears, keep in mind, would have been a 1 seed in the 2020 tournament if it had been played. Baylor's highest seed before this season was a 3, which has happened four times. Prior to that, they had only made one appearance since 1950. It took four seasons to get the program back to respectability, and the Bears have now been to nine NCAA tournaments since 2008. Baylor basketball had been decimated by scandal, resulting NCAA sanctions and the transfer of most of the team's better players. Scott Drew took the Baylor job in August 2003 after the program had basically been burned to the ground. The win capped one of the biggest reclamation projects in college basketball history. Baylor dominated Gonzaga wire-to-wire in an 86-70 win on Monday night as the Bears program captured its first national championship.
